Parent Teacher Organization
What is a PTO?
An elementary school Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is an independent, volunteer-run group composed of parents, guardians, and school staff dedicated to supporting and enriching the educational experience of students. Unlike national associations, a PTO operates locally to build a tight-knit school community by organizing family events, coordinating classroom volunteers, and raising funds for essential resources such as field trips, classroom supplies, and playground upgrades. By fostering direct collaboration between families and educators, the PTO ensures that additional resources and support go straight toward the school’s specific needs.
How is a PTO different from a PTA (Parent Teacher Association)?
A PTA is part of a centralized national network, whereas a PTO is an independent, single-school group. PTAs have a formal charter under the National PTA and require membership dues. They have strict national bylaws and reporting rules. PTOs are local entities with free membership and custom bylaws designed by local school parents. They focus 100% of their fundraising and events on the local school.
