Attendance and Tardies
Attendance and Tardy Awareness
Chronic habits of being tardy (arriving after 8:15 AM or leaving before 2:40 PM) and absenteeism can contribute to lower test scores and even retention. Here are some things families can do at home to help their student(s):
- Shiloh Elementary starts the school day at 8:15 AM. This is when instruction starts. Students should be in their seat, ready to learn by 8:15 AM.
- Build regular routines for bedtime and morning. Children need structure in their day and parents are the best people to start that habit.
- Talk about the importance of regular attendance, being on time, and about how your child feels about school.
- Don't permit missing school unless your child is truly sick. Use a thermometer to check for fever. Remember, stomach aches and headaches may be signs of anxiety.
- Keep a chart or review ParentVUE for student's attendance. At the end of the week, talk with your child about what you see.
- Develop back-up plans for getting to school on time if something comes up. Ask a family member or neighbor for help.
- Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
- Seek support from school staff or community groups to help with transportation, health problems or resources. Our guidance counselors are here to help!
- GCPS has additional supports for you at this webpage.
