Attendance and Tardies
Attendance and Tardy Awareness
Chronic habits of being tardy (arriving after 8:15 AM or leaving before 2:40 PM) and absenteeism can contribute to lower test scores and even retention. Here are some things families can do at home to help their student(s):
- Shiloh Elementary starts the school day at 8:15 AM. This is when instruction starts. Students should be in their seat, ready to learn by 8:15 AM.
- Build regular routines for bedtime and morning. Children need structure in their day and parents are the best people to start that habit.
- Talk about the importance of regular attendance, being on time, and about how your child feels about school.
- Don't permit missing school unless your child is truly sick. Use a thermometer to check for fever. Remember, stomach aches and headaches may be signs of anxiety.
- Keep a chart or review ParentVUE for student's attendance. At the end of the week, talk with your child about what you see.
- Develop back-up plans for getting to school on time if something comes up. Ask a family member or neighbor for help.

- Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
- Seek support from school staff or community groups to help with transportation, health problems or resources. Our guidance counselors are here to help!
- GCPS has additional supports for you at this webpage.
GCPS Definitions You Need to Know
The responsibility of school attendance is that of both parents/families and students. School attendance is important as it underscores the significance of learning and obtaining an education in our ever-evolving society. Regular school attendance also correlates strongly with improved grades, and it helps students develop good work habits that will carry over in life. To aid students in being academically successful, regular attendance is required to attain the Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) standards. The Superintendent has designated the minimum attendance levels in procedure consistent with state standards. Please visit the GCPS attendance policies for students and families for the most current information.
